IMPACT OF INFRASTRUCTURE AND LOCAL ENVIRONMENT ON ROAD UNSAFETY. LOGISTIC MODELING WITH SPATIAL AUTOCORRELATION
This study applies to Belgium where some 1500 people are killed each year on the roads, one of the highest risks in Europe. This paper examines the influence of infrastructure on road unsafety. The objective is to model the impact of characteristics of roads and local environmental conditions on road unsafety. The paper expresses road unsafety as whether a hectometer of road belongs to a black zone; a black zone is defined as a segment of road where accidents are concentrated. Results indicate that local environment and road infrastructure play a substantial role in the co-occurrence of road accidents.
