DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF BOILER SMOKE DENSITY OPTIMIZER
A prototype steam generator smoke density optimizer was designed, fabricated, developed, and evaluated. This device has the capability of providing optimum smoke density conditions in the uptake of a steam generator thus maximizing combustion efficiency. This effect is created by optically sensing smoke density and correcting combustion air flow in discrete steps until the desired density is obtained. Both the prototype, and a commercial model were evaluated under full scale operating conditions on laboratory steam generators. Both units performed satisfactorily; it is recommended that the smoke density optimizer be considered suitable for Naval use, subject to demonstration of compliance with applicable shock and vibration specifications.
