MODELING VIBRATIONS IN THE COMPOSITE WHEEL

This article introduces a calculation model for studying vibrations and sound radiation on various surfaces of the composite wheel. The composite wheel is an innovative concept to reduce the noise generation from vehicles; it is made of a flexible ring made of a composite material supported by stiff spokes of carbon fibre reinforced material. The open design reduces noise radiation. Vibration modelling and rolling contact modelling for low frequencies were used to investigate parametric excitation of vibrations: the figures show that the model captures the main behaviour of the wheel. A contact model is used to calculate the forces between the wheel and the road when rolling. A simulation is done with a virtual wheel at three different speeds on rough or smooth surface profiles to demonstrate the model. The geometry of the wheel in contact with a road surface makes a horn at the leading and trailing edge; the model is able to predict this horn effect.
