USE OF ADVANCED SURVEYING TECHNIQUES IN RAILWAY ASSET MANAGEMENT
With the objective to validate and augment the Scottish Railtrack Asset Register to a specific quality level by March 2001, traditional surveying techniques were no longer viable. Railtrack Scotland therefore investigated technologically advanced methods to provide the solution. An airborne platform incorporating global positioning, reflectorless laser range finding, and video imagery emerged as the only system that could fulfil all the project criteria, being cost effective, rapid, and highly accurate, while offering additional benefits. Although the technology has been used on 2 other occasions in a railway environment, the integration of existing data for validation has never been attempted. This posed additional obstacles to be overcome within this project. Through a survey of less than one month it has been possible to gather sufficient information to validate key assets on some 2700 km of railway, without any disruption to rail services or endangering the safety of any staff by necessitating any on track presence. Additional benefit has been gained through the solution's three dimensional nature, allowing derivation of gradient and curvature information etc. For the covering abstract see ITRD E123713.
