SOME ASPECTS OF THE DESIGN AND BUILDING OF LARGE FLOATING DOCKS
The advantages and disadvantages of floating docks for docking large vessels and their dimensioning at the design stage are reviewed. The problem of supporting ships and bending in the ship-dock system has been thoroughly investigated by AB Gotaverken, and a new method of supporting the ship has been adapted in a 55,000-ton floating dock built by the Gdansk ship repairing yard in Poland. Ways of decreasing shearing forces and bending moments, both transverse and longitudinal, by suitable distribution of ballast water are discussed. A method of calculating the towage bending moments on a cosinusoidal wave is given; static deep heeling of the dock is presented. Ballast pumping and electric installation as well as transport facilities are discussed. The method of constructing a dock out of eight blocks, built and launched separately and joined afloat, is presented.
