PERFORMANCE MONITORING SYSTEM FOR MEDIUM-SPEED DIESEL ENGINES
The Author, of S.E.M.T., describes the development of a continuous monitoring-system for his company's medium-speed engines. A 12-cylinder PC 2-5 in a power station at Saint-Nazaire has served as a "guinea-pig", and a prototype system is installed on one of the 18 PC 2-5 engines in the roll-on/roll-off ship Renoir, which entered service in January 1978. A second prototype is installed on a PC-4 on the test bed at Saint-Denis. In a medium-speed engine, the number of components monitored has to be limited (as compared with those of a slow-speed engine) for technical and economic reasons, and the development of the system has therefore been centred on the crankshaft, piston rings, exhaust temperatures, and turbocharging system. Reasons for this choice are given, and the system, with its instrumentation and the interpretation of the signals, is described and discussed, together with some results. Although problems have been encountered, the initial results have been satisfactory; at least another year will be necessary, however, to obtain confirmation that the system will meet service requirements, and it will probably take longer than this before the economic advantage of the system can be assessed.
