FATIGUE, SLEEPINESS AND REDUCED ALERTNESS AS RISK FACTORS IN DRIVING
TROTTHET, SOVNING OG REDUSERT ARVAKENHET SOM RISIKOFACTORER VED BILKJORING
A workshop given in September 2003, about driver sleepiness and fatigue, was part of the European Union project called IMMORTAL. The items presented at the workshop form the basis for this report. The topics discussed and presented at the workshop are as follows: 1) the role of fatigue and sleep in traffic accidents, and the incidence of drivers falling asleep at the wheel; 2) the clinical, medical and biological bases of sleep, 3) studies of simulations of indicators of fatigue; 4) Eyelid and eye movements as indicators of fatigue; 5) Driver warning systems (in-vehicle) to prevent drivers from falling asleep at the wheel; and 6) occupational drivers and fatigue management.
