RECENT TRENDS IN MOBILE COMPUTING FOR DEMAND RESPONSE TRANSPORTATION
This article discusses mobile computing as a general category of demand responsive technology, specifically for transportation. Suggested are ways in which managers and operators can assess its potential impact both in terms of operational efficiencies and broader organizational goals. Drawing from the experiences of agencies that have adopted and used some of these technologies, the article describes some best practices for assessing and implementing them and identifies where opportunities for efficiency and service integration are possibly found. As mobile computing is a rather broad term that includes a number of technology subsets, the article will be limited to mobile data computers and to automatic vehicle location.
