NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING METHODS IN HIGHWAY ENGINEERING

Non-destructive testing (NDT) methods used to ensure the quality of highways in India are described: estimation of in situ California Bearing Ratio (CRB), in situ density and moisture measurement, and bitumen content estimation. Pavement evaluation tools that are based on NDT are outlined: Benkelman Beam, automated Benkelman Beam, La Croix deflectograph, falling weight deflectograph, Dynaflect, the Road rater system and the dynamic deflection device. The use of ground penetration radar and spectral analysis of surface waves for gauging the condition of pavements is discussed.
