AN APPLICATION OF RELIABILITY FUNCTION MODEL TO ESTIMATE OFFSHORE PLATFORM RISK AT THE EARLY STAGE OF DESIGN
This paper presents a brief review on the concept of a reliability function model for estimating risks of a fixed offshore platform caused by waves and then investigates the influence of some parameters on the reliability, such as pile radius, wall thickness, wave height, design life, and storm-occurrence rate. At the early stage of design, when these parameters still are not determined definitely, a speedy and rough examination of their effects on the structural risk is most desirable for decision-making. For this purpose, the formulation of reliability is approximated to some extent and expressed in function of the parameters in a compact form. Hereby a value of reliability is assumed to be known for a particular reference value of each parameter. A set of reference values may be provided from available data of existing platforms; otherwise, a representative run of calculation is necessary for a starting basis of using this method. In order to illustrate this method, a numerical example for a templated-type steel platform is carried out and its result clearly demonstrates the utility of this method for practical application, especially at the early stage of design.
