EFFECT OF WATER-TABLE POSITION ON FROST HEAVE
Research carried out at TRRL has confirmed that lowering of water-table level is associated with a lowering of the amount of frost heave. The research has obtained precise information on the relationship between frost-heave and depth to water-table. The work took the form of constructing a refrigerated room containing a concrete lined pit designed to hold various model road structures. The pit also had the facility for adjusting water table position. Heave was recorded on each of 35 asphalt blocks and results of typical runs for total heave was recorded. The results show a strong correlation between heave and depth to water-table in the experimental conditions used. /TRRL/
