WIND TUNNEL AND PROPULSION TEST FACILITIES: AN ASSESSMENT OF NASA'S CAPABILITIES TO SERVE NATIONAL NEEDS

This paper summarizes a study conducted from June 2002 through July 2003. The study assessed (1) the United States' wind tunnel and propulsion testing needs; (2) the ongoing ability of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) main wind tunnel and propulsion test facilities to meet these needs; (3) excess capacities within NASA and any new investments needed. In addition, the study addressed the need for larger, more expensive test facilities and also noted management issues that face NASA's wind tunnel and propulsion test facilities.
