FIXED-PITCH PROPELLER SHAFT-GENERATOR SYSTEM FROM MITSUBISHI
The advantages of a shaft-generator system, without the extra expense of a c.p. propeller, are obtainable with the Mitsubishi FPP SGS system briefly described in this article. The system, which complies with the requirements for periodically-unattended engine-rooms, allows electricity to be generated at constant frequency and rated output at between 80 and 110% of rated shaft-speed, and at constant frequency and an output proportional to rpm at between 60 and 80% of rated speed. An alternator driven via a clutch by the main engine, either from the engine output shaft or through the gearbox of a geared installation, generates a.c. of a frequency proportional to engine speed. This a.c. is converted to d.c. by a rectifier and then reconverted to a.c. of constant frequency and voltage by a thyristor inverter; this a.c. is then fed to the ship's distribution system. One of the ship's auxiliary Diesel-alternator sets must have a clutch between the engine and the alternator; when the main shaft-alternator is in action, this clutch is disengaged and the auxiliary alternator rotates as a synchronous condenser. The clutch is engaged in the event of the main engine failing or being stopped in emergency.
