PERFORMANCE-BASED TRACK GEOMETRY INSPECTION : WHAT IT IS AND HOW IT WORKS
A new track inspection technology links track geometry to vehicle performance, using an add-on that gives real-time data. Implementation of the inspection method, called PBTG (performance-based track geometry) inspection should enable track geometry maintenance to be prioritized because current systems do not always link geometry flaws to vehicle performance. PBTG allows users to specify the types of vehicles and operating speeds to measure the importance of track geometry changes on safety and performance. Three categories of performance are included in the package: derailment potential, stress state, and ride quality. The system has an interface with conventional track inspection systems to allow inputs from conventional inspections. PBTG generates exception reports, which identify track locations that need extra attention. The prototype has been demonstrated on test tracks at the Federal Railroad Administration's Transportation Technology Center and in revenue service to see if the system could do vehicle response analysis onboard at the same pace as the track geometry measurement vehicle. PBTG was stable and performed its functions. It is completing its first commercial deployment on track geometry vehicles for Burlington Northern Santa Fe.
