UTILIZATION OF FOUNDRY SANDS IN EARTH CONSTRUCTION - DEVELOPMENT OF QUALITY CONTROL SYSTEM FOR FOUNDRY SANDS
Approximately 130,000 t of excess foundry sands are produced annually in Finland. Environmental acceptance of foundry sands for construction requires reliable knowledge about the composition of the sand and its variation, especially regarding environmental properties. This paper describes the development of an individual quality control system for a selected foundry using alkaline phenolic sand. The variations in the quality and the compositions were evaluated and the influence of some parameters, like the circulation rate of sand, the size of the casting pieces, and the handling systems of the sand were studied. The following factors were checked for the development of the quality control program: daily variations in the foundry sand composition; variations in composition at different points in the sand circulation program; the influence of size of the casting pieces on the sand; and the influence of the sand handling steps on the sand composition.
