DYNAMIC BEHAVIOR OF ICE UNDER CYCLIC AXIAL LOADING
Dynamic Young's modulus and damping ratio were determined for axial strain amplitudes, temperatures, frequencies, and confining pressures. The value of dynamic Young's modulus over the range of test conditions was from 340 x 10 to the third power psi to 900 x 10 to the third power psi (2,350 x 10 to the third power kN/sq m to 6,200 x 10 to the third power N/sq m); the value of damping ratio was from 0.02 to 0.11. The test results indicate the dynamic Young's modulus of ice increases with increasing confining pressure and frequency and decreases with ascending temperature and strain amplitude. The damping ratio of ice appears to decrease as frequency increases from 0.05 cps to 1.0 cps and increases as frequency increases from 1.0 cps to 5.0 cps. The damping ratio appears to decrease with descending temperature and increase with increasing strain amplitude. There appears to be no well-defined relationship between the damping ratio of ice and confining pressure. /ASCE/
