THE USE OF GULLY WASTE IN THE MANUFACTURE OF ASPHALT MATERIALS

Sustainability has become an important consideration in the manufacture of asphalt materials. Research and development now tries to reduce consumption of raw materials by reducing the amount of waste disposed by landfill and promoting recycling. For example, the UK construction industry has reduced the use of primary aggregate by 31% and increased by 44% the use of recycled and secondary aggregate over the past decade. Taxes have been introduced on primary aggregates and waste going to landfill. This paper reports findings from a current research project at the University of Ulster into the use of waste extracted from roadside gullys as an aggregate in asphalt materials. This is a fine graded material that is regarded as being non-inert material with potential to pollute and so attracts higher taxes when sent to landfill. The use of this material as the fine aggregate of a bituminous mix is assessed for a hot rolled asphalt base. The findings indicate that addition of dried gully waste fine aggregate may provide a sustainable use for this waste material. For the covering abstract see ITRD E121480.
