LOW TEMPERATURE ASPHALT - EXPERIENCE IN ROLLED ASPHALT
The leading industrial nations have agreed to reduce CO2 emissions. This obligation and the related discussion concerning bitumen fumes and aerosols challenge the asphalt industry to develop measures for reducing temperatures. This is because a reduction of the temperature by 10 degrees C lessens emissions by about 50%. The addition of selected paraffins to the binder is one option for reducing the temperatures. These paraffins modify the viscosity of the basic binder in such a way that the producing and paving temperatures can be reduced by up to 30 degrees C in comparison to the basic binder. This behaviour also simplifies the paving of asphalt mixes with a high resistance to compaction. In addition to the temperature reduction, the paraffin additive also increases the stiffness of the binder, so that this binder variant is especially suitable for heavy duty pavements. In practice up to now, more than 200,000 t of wearing courses have been manufactured and paved with paraffin-modified binder. For the covering abstract see ITRD E121480.
