ASSESSING PERFORMANCE OF COLD MIX FOAMED EMULSION ASPHALT MIXES
In the UK there is an increasing trend in the use of cold mix technologies. They are in general more environmentally friendly and have energy cost benefits over hot mix material. This paper outlines the main existing cold-mix technologies, then describes a programme of laboratory testing designed to assess the performance of a typical base course material with a foamed emulsion binder. The foamed emulsion process has been developed to optimise the properties of foamed bitumen and bitumen emulsion binders. The results show that foamed emulsion is a credible bituminous mix technology offering significant sustainability advantages over conventional hot mixes. For the covering abstract see ITRD E121480.
