A NEW APPROACH TO THE CALCULATION OF THE HYDROSTATIC MAGNITUDES FOR A TRIMMED VESSEL

The diagram presenting ship displacement, two co-ordinates of the centre of buoyancy, and height of metacentre above keel, as a function of draught forward and aft, is well known. However, as the calculations for such diagrams are based on the transverse planes of the hull and are carried out for the trimmed ship, the calculation time is very long. The Authors (of the Technical University, Gdansk) propose a quicker method in which the calculations are carried out for the ship in its designed position of flotation, i.e. without trim. Additional hydrostatic curves are thus obtained which enable the magnitudes for the trimmed ship to be easily and accurately determined. The method is explained in detail, and an example is included for the case of a semi-containership of 150 m length b.p. An appendix explains the differentiation of the geometric characteristics of a constant-volume water plane with respect to the angle of inclination.
