HAWAII 2002 ECONOMIC CENSUS: VEHICLE INVENTORY AND USE SURVEY. GEOGRAPHIC AREA SERIES

The Vehicle Inventory and Use Survey (VIUS) provides data on the physical and operational characteristics of the nation's truck population. This survey is conducted every 5 years as part of the Economic Census. Its primary goal is to produce national and state-level estimates of the total number of trucks. The 2002 VIUS is a probability sample of private and commercial trucks registered (or licensed) in the United States as of July 1, 2002. A sample of about 136,000 trucks was surveyed to measure the characteristics of nearly 89 million trucks registered in the United States. Registrations are included for sport utility vehicles, minivans, and pickup trucks. Registration practices for commercial vehicles differ greatly among the states. Some states register a truck-tractor semitrailer combination as a single unit; others register the tractor and the semitrailer separately. For either method of registration, only truck-tractors are included in the registered truck counts. The report includes information on fuel efficiency, annual mileage, primary range of operation, and permanent equipment. This survey covers Hawaii. According to the survey, there were 351,400 private and commercial trucks registered in Hawaii during 2002, up approximately 19% from 1997. About 74% of all trucks were used for personal transportation, while 22% were operated for business, including for-hire use.
