CAE-BASED SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAG DESIGN. IN: AIR BAGS AND BELT CONSTRAINTS
Side impact represents one of the most important crash modes in the field. In 2001, 33.3% of fatalities and 28.6% of injuries of passenger car occupants were caused by side impacts. Side curtain air bag systems have been applied as countermeasure in many vehicles, and computer aided engineering (CAE) is often used to help side curtain air bag design. The CAE-based side curtain air bag design program discussed in this paper shows great potential to reduce the material cost and time duration of the air bag design process. Besides the cost savings, rthe CAE based approach also provides the following benefits: With CAE models, deeper understanding and insights to the physics of the design problems can be achieved; design of experiments and other numerical optimization tools can be used to optimize a design; and the CAE experience learned from previous designs can be easily transferred to new products.
