DATA EXCHANGE ACROSS EUROPE TO ENABLE MULTIMODAL ITS SERVICES

To encourage travellers to make use of different modes of transport, transferring from one means of transport to another has to be smooth and easy. This requires reliable and efficient travel information about each of the different transport modes. The TRIDENT project (IST-1999-10076) is developing mechanisms for the sharing and exchange of common traffic and travel data to enable and support multi-modal services. TRIDENT is a 30-month research and development project co-funded by the European Commission under the IST Programme. The goal of the project is to develop the common mechanisms that are required for sharing and exchanging data between transport operators, service providers and authorities about different modes (bus/tram/metro, rail and road). It is also investigating and proposing solutions for organisational and strategic issues hampering travel intermodality. This will lead to proposals for new standards as well as to recommendations supporting the implementation of systems based on the project's results.
