FACTORS THAT AFFECT WATER EROSION FROM CONSTRUCTION AREAS
The various factors that affect water erosion from agricultural lands are reviewed. Methods for predicting soil loss from agricultural lands appear to be well established and can be generally applied to farmlands. A review of the conditions existing on construction sites, however, indicates that they bear only a limited similarity to conditions on agriculatural lands. The need to develop new means for predicting sediment yield from construction areas is evident. The factors that determine soil loss from a construction site are likely to be quite different from those used in determining soil loss from agriculatrual lands. Methods for controlling water erosion from construction areas are briefly discussed. The major factor is control of runoff water during the construction period. Current work to define the factors involved in erosion-control measures and the relative efficiencies of such measures are discussed. /Author/
