CONSIDER THE ENVIRONMENT - WHY AND HOW

2 - 6% of the worldwide CO2 emission stems from cement production. Furthermore the worldwide production of cement is increased by 5% per year. It is a well-known myth, that reduction of environmental impacts in the industry costs money, and requires lots of additional work and efforts. This does not apply to concrete - considering the environment saves money. In order to assist the industry to assess and later to reduce the environmental impacts for individual products, a number of tools have become available during the last years, and the environmental impact seen in a wider perspective, can be obtained by the concept of life cycle assessment. The ultimate way of addressing harmful environmental impacts is the adoption of cleaner technologies, ranging from optimisation of the production machinery of a concrete manufacturer to introduction of "green" concrete mix design. In the near future, experience gained in earlier works conducted at the Technical Institute and other leading research institutions in Europe, will be further developed in the ECO-Serve project, and partly financed by the European commission.
