CASE STUDIES OF TWO INTERMODAL TRANSPORTATION CHAINS BETWEEN SWEDEN AND GERMANY
The aim of this study is to determine the function of information and goods flow as well as the responsibility delegation in two similar intermodal transportation chains. As many as possible of the persons involved in the two flows have been interviewed. They have all given their image of the whole system regarding goods, information and responsibility. All the interview results have then been merged into this report. The author has performed all of the interviews. The work has resulted in process maps, maps of responsibility delegation as well as a number of observations regarding the efficient handling of information. Above all can be mentioned that in spite of the means to use EDI, both systems relied heavily on phone and fax for communication. Deviations from normal increased the information density drastically, even small ones. (A)
