BERLIN : RESTORING A DIVIDED TRAM NETWORK
This article describes how the tram network service in Berlin has been in a restoration and extension process over the past ten years. Objectives of the project have included an improved and more attractive light rail service providing higher than average speeds, better punctuality and reliability, good interchange with other modes, and user-friendly timetable planning. An additional objective was the restoration of links between the two parts of Berlin and the progressive extension of the tram routes back into the former western zone. The article describes the acquisition of new vehicles and refurbishing of older ones, the restoration of tracks, stops, depots and equipment, the extension of computer-aided operations, and the formation of a dynamic passenger information system.
