AIRFREIGHT: SWAN LAKE OR SWAN SONG?
Air cargo traffic is expected to grow faster than air passenger growth in coming years. However, the air cargo industry is still facing major challenges. First, costs continue to rise across the board, and many of these costs are outside the direct control of the airlines. At the same time, the average yield per kilo generated by air cargo continues a slow but steady decline. A second challenge the industry is security and the difficulty of complying with a variety of competing security standards. The industry also faces challenges due to the regulatory regime that airlines operate under, and the slow adoption of technology in the air cargo industry. To meet these challenges, a close relationship based on cooperation and communication between the airline and freight forwarder industries is needed.
