GASOHOL IS TESTED

A 90 day test of gasohol (90% gasoline, 10% alcohol) was recently tested. Gasohol produced better fuel mileage and lower air pollution emissions than gasoline. Of the 20 state vehicles that began the test in February, 11 finished. Nine vehicles failed to complete the test due to mechanical difficulties unrelated to gasohol use, or because the drivers were unable to use gasohol consistently. The 11 vehicles finishing the test averaged 11.9 miles per gallon gasohol, compared to an average 11.2 miles per gallon on gasoline. Average emissions of carbon monoxide declined 32%. Average hydrocarbon emissions decreased 7%. The main conclusion that should be drawn from this test is that gasohol is a viable motor fuel that performs as well as or slightly better than gasoline. Gasohol, however, is more expensive to buy today.
