DEVELOPMENT IN BRAKE DESIGN
The article discusses the significance of the introduction of disc brakes some twenty years ago, its contribution to road safety and also examines anticipated trends and improvements. Compared to disc brakes which are rarely subject to fading, drum brakes are very sensitive to variations in friction coefficient; this phenomenon being closely associated with thermal loads. Increased braking performance requirements of vehicles were met with the introduction of the disc brake with its advantages of linear performance and reduced sensitivity. The development of the 'floating frame' disc brake was later introduced to provide stable performance under varying steering conditions. An advantage of this design is low brake fluid temperature as the fluid does not circulate in the hot zone. /TRRL/
