SEA-GOING CRANES. STABILISED, SEMISUBMERSIBLE CRANESHIPS FOR OFFSHORE OPERATIONS
Operations with traditional crane-carrying workships for the offshore oil and gas industry are limited by the problem of rolling motions, these can be particularly severe in the North Sea where roll amplitudes are sufficiently high to restrict operability to as low as 50% in summer and 10% in winter. The article describes a concept for a stabilised, semi-submersible workship developed by Heerema Engineering Services of the Hague. The design incorporates a swift-acting computer-controlled dynamic ballasting/de-ballasting system to compensate for the loading of the two cranes, which have lifting capacities of 3,000 tons and 2,000 tons respectively.
