SOME OBSERVATIONS ON THE CONTRACTION OF WELDMENTS, AND ON APPROPRIATE STRAIGHTENING METHODS, IN SHIP STRUCTURES
Some of the smaller Spanish shipyards still use single-flame methods of flame-straightening in new construction and in repair work; such methods are less effective and more costly than more up-to-date methods in which multi-flame equipment is used. For the benefit of such yards, and for general information, the Author (of Germanischer Lloyd, Bilbao) describes modern methods in which adjustable multi-flame torches are used. The description of these methods is preceded by a discussion of some examples of how the deformations, and hence the need for straightening, can be minimised. This covers the preparation of butts and seams, the welding of shell and other plating, and the welding of a prefabricated section and of one such section to another.
