OCL'S TABLE BAY OPENS SAECS "BIG SHIP" SERVICE
In 1974, the 21 members of the South & South-East Africa Conference agreed to introduce a fleet of container ships into the Europe--South Africa trades, starting operations in 1977. It was planned to operate ten 21-knot cellular ships, each capable of carrying about 2,450 TEUs, supplemented by four smaller ships connecting Mediterranean ports with South Africa; in the meantime, orders for two roll-on/roll-off ships have replaced an order for one of the 2,450-TEU container ships. The first of the larger container-ships to be completed was OCL's Table Bay, delivered by AG Weser in late 1977 and now in service; she was followed by Safmarine's SA Helderberg, built at Dunkirk. The article, which gives some further information on the arrangements for these services, consists mainly of a description of the Table Bay, whose principal particulars are: Length, o.a.-258.5 m; b.p.-248.2 m; Breadth, moulded-32.26 m; Depth, moulded-24.15 m; Draught, design-12 m; Draught, max. summer-13 m; Deadweight on 12 m draught-47,197 tonnes; Register tonnage (British) 53,784 gross, 34,821 net; Container capacity (TEUs, 8 ft 6 in. higher)-Below deck 849 plus 886 refrigerated; on deck 601 plus 55 refrigerated. The article, which describes the ship and her cargo and other arrangements in some detail, includes general-arrangement and engine-room drawings.
