OIL SPILL CONTINGENCY PLANNING FOR THE BP FORTIES OIL FIELD PRODUCTION, PIPELINE AND TERMINAL SYSTEMS
The Forties oilfield in the United Kingdom sector of the North Sea is about 100 mi off the Scottish coast. Four steel platforms will eventually produce 500,000 bbl of oil/d and deliver it by the subsea pipeline and 130-mi landline to the BP Grangemouth oil refinery and Hound Point oil terminal on the Firth of Forth. Although the safety measures both on platforms at sea and on shore installation should largely negate the risk of oil spillage, contingency plans have been developed to cover the entire system. The plan and the types of problems involved are described. The work has required re-examining methods of oil spill cleanup at sea and on land, bearing in mind ecological problems, and redesigning equipment where necessary.
