CRITERIA FOR CYCLE SIGNAL INSTALLATION

The development of facilities to provide for cyclists in the medium-sized urban area of Bedford/Kempston led to the decision to plan for the use of signal-controlled crossings where the proposed cycle systems would cross a major highway. Criteria for traffic signals (vehicles) and pelican crossings (pedestrians) exist, but not for cycles, and the author describes research undertaken to determine such criteria as an aid to traffic engineers where cycle-route construction is undertaken, and to see if cycle signals would be needed. The survey method is described, and the results obtained discussed in relation to curves depicting the crossing time, gap acceptance time and Poisson distribution of traffic for road widths of 7.3 M, 9.7 M and 14.1 M. The use of such criteria is illustrated by means of an example showing how the three elements of the criteria are calculated, and what conclusions can be drawn from the results so obtained. The existing situation is considered in relation to curves illustrating cycles per hour compared to vehicles per hour for road widths of 3.7 M, 7.3 M, 11.0 M and 14.7 M, and an example is detailed to indicate the need for or against the installation of a signal-controlled crossing. /TRRL/
