REAL-TIME ADAPTIVE AIDING USING PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGICAL OPERATOR STATE ASSESSMENT. IN: ENGINEERING PSYCHOLOGY AND COGNITIVE ERGONOMICS. VOLUME SIX. INDUSTRIAL ERGONOMICS, HCI, AND APPLIED COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY

Optimal operator functional state is critical to overall system performance. Sub-optimal states can lead to errors and reduced system performance. This article describes a hardware/software system developed that uses psychophysiological measures to assess operator functional state. Artificial neural networks are used to classify operator functional state based on psychophysiological inputs. The data is reduced on-line so that continuous estimates of functional state can be made. An example of adaptive aiding using a complex lab task showed that adaptive aiding based on the subject's functional state enhances performance.
