KIDS N' TRAINS : INNOVATION IN RAIL MARKETING
To increase ridership in the San Joaquin Valley in California, representatives of communities served by Amtrak devised a program offering groups of school children round trip rides on the San Joaquins for five dollars anywhere on the route. The successful program encourages teachers and students to travel for educational purposes and fills vacancies on Amtrak trains. Between September 2000 and May 2001 Amtrak carried 18,000 students and chaperones on 277 trips throughout the state. Ridership increased to 33,000 in 2001- 2002.
