NCAT PAVEMENT TRACK PUTS SUPERPAVE TO TEST
This article describes the first two years of Superpave (Superior Performing Asphalt Pavements) asphalt mix testing at Auburn University's National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) new pavement track in Alabama. During this time period, some of the evaluations included: performance of fine-graded versus coarse-graded mixes, the effect of asphalt grade on performance, and performance of several mixture types, including Superpave, stone matrix asphalt, and open-graded friction courses. The most significant feature of the NCAT Pavement Test Track is that it provides field validation for Superpave test procedures and results gained in the lab. The article discusses the general discoveries made, performance evaluations of fine mixes versus coarse mixes, the conditions at the track, the testing and monitoring procedures, and also other studies conducted by the NCAT.
