SPREADING THE WORD

Pre-wet salt spreading is the accepted method of winter maintenance in mainland Europe, but it has not been fully accepted in the UK. When salt becomes moist, it causes ice and snow to melt. Dry salt is susceptible to the action of wind and traffic turbulence. In pre-wet salting, the salt is mixed with brine to produce a slurry that is easier than dry salt to control. Once the wetted salt is on the road surface, it stays where it has landed. The brine provides the adhesion to keep it in place. Pre-wet salt spreading ensures a better performance obtained with less salt.
