INTELLIGENT TRANSPORT SYSTEMS AS APPLICABLE TO INDIAN ROADS

This paper discusses the possible applications of information technology and intelligent traffic systems in the Indian road network. There is a need to improve safety on the roads and to employ robust systems. Communications technology is being developed which can be planned in at the stage of road construction. Intelligent highway systems in other countries are briefly reviewed. In India, problems of congestion and poor management need to be addressed, and certain systems are considered. Advanced traffic management systems can be used to improve traffic flow and detect traffic incidents, and are operated from a central control centre. Advanced traveller information systems provide accurate and timely information to assist users of public and private transport. Electronic toll collection systems, fleet management using automatic vehicle location systems and electronic parking management systems are described. Some of these intelligent transport systems are being developed in India but standards need to be evolved. For the covering abstract see ITRD E116046.
