DIGITAL SENSOR NETWORK: A COMMUNICATION NETWORK FOR SENSING SYSTEMS
A Digital Sensor Network (DSN): a Communication Network for Sensing Systems, over which sensors can work collaboratively with each other, is described. The fundamental function of DSN is surveillance and control. The requirements for DSN are discussed, that is, a platform for sensors, open protocol for user access, and priority control for resource access. ITS communication standards and Internet Protocol (IP) are applied to realize these requirements. QoS (Quality of Service) control and resource reservation must be considered to apply these protocols for time critical communication. A prototype system of sensor (TV camera) control and video transmission was implemented, which uses NTCIP (National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol) for TV camera control and can transmit Motion JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) and MPEG2 (Moving Picture Experts Group) video over IP. Video code can also be controlled in the same fashion as in the TV cameras. This prototype system is placed in the very early stages of DSN. Future directions of DSN are also described.
