EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON BEHAVIOR OF STEEL FRAME-TYPE PIERS DURING EARTHQUAKE

Many road structures, including steel bridge piers, were damaged during the Hyogoken Nanbu Earthquake. Since that earthquake, research to improve the seismic performance of steel piers has been carried out by various organizations. The results were adopted for practical seismic designs. Most of the previous research, however, was conducted on cantilever-type, single pier models subjected to both vertical and horizontal loading on the pier tops, and few studies have been conducted on frame-type pier models. This paper describes two experimental studies on the ductility and stability of frame-type steel piers using a cyclic loading test.
