MANDELA PKWY : BUILDING PRIDE IN WEST OAKLAND

Rebuilding a 2-kilometer corridor in West Oakland where the old Cypress Freeway route once was involved Caltrans landscape architects working with the city and the immediate neighborhood on a context sensitive design. The original right of way was de-certified in 1991, two years after the Loma Prieta earthquake destroyed the structure. The renamed section is Mandela Parkway and is expected to take two years and cost $11.5 million, running between 8th and 32nd Streets. The median is as wide as 33 meters and will accommodate mixed used path along with plantings. New Class 2 bike lanes will act as connections with the Bay Trail, and median crossings at 13th, 17th and 20th Streets will be closed to cars. Three important gateways are encompassed in the project: the welcome to those arriving from the Bay Bridge at West Grand Avenue; at 8th St., which is more oriented to the West Oakland BART station, and the gateway to the north where businesses and communities sit atop the corridor. Lawns will be prevalent to enable mowing to eliminate weeds, since the city has restrictive pesticide policies. Plantings are designed to enhance users' sense of safety.
