THINKING OUTSIDE THE (SAND) BOX
Nontoxic spent foundry sand is gaining increased credibility as a construction material. Cost effectiveness and growing research demonstrating the value of recycled materials are contributing to this interest. This article describes how foundry sand is being used in Ohio, where a new standard adopted in the mid 1990s lists criteria to select sands with certain measurable properties, giving recycling plants the ability to test the foundry sand and prove its suitability. The Ohio Turnpike Commission has used over 158,000 tons of foundry sand over the past few years, including in the construction of extensive reinforced embankments.
