CORROSION AND CORROSION PREVENTION IN CIVIL ENGINEERING STEEL STRUCTURES

LA CORROSION ET L'ANTICORROSION DANS LE DOMAINE DES OUVRAGES METALLIQUES DE GENIE CIVIL

This article serves as an introduction to all the studies of painting of steel structures appearing in this edition (see IRRD abstracts nos 104661-104664) and to appear in no 88 of this journal. The studies cover a vast sector of the problems of corrosion prevention in civil engineering steel structures and more especially structures under the control of the minister of equipment (ministere de l'equipement) (steel bridges, suspension and cable stayed bridges; cables of suspension bridges and stayed girder bridges; lock gates); they also consider the use of pre-painted sheets and profiles, the utilization of paints with a high zinc content, the use of abrasives for the preparation of surfaces, the organization of work sites in regard to corrosion prevention. The author considers: (1) the technical, administrative and juridical environment of the problems; (2) a certain number of fundamental questions: (A) the size and seriousness of corrosion phenomena; (B) the increase of susceptibility to corrosion; (C) the variety of corrosion; (D) prevention of corrosion in steel structures; (E) preparation of the surface; (F) aesthetic aspects. /TRRL/
