SLIDING SAFETY WALLS FOR RAIL CROSSINGS

In both rural and urban areas, rail crossings present a danger to automobile drivers. This essay provides some possible solutions to reduce the risk. In rural areas, where crossings are not well-illuminated or do not incorporate cross arms, rail cars could be equipped with reflective tape so that the rail cars would reflect back from the headlights. Rail cars could also be painted with fluorescent or photoluminiscent paint to increase their visibility. To eliminate the possibility of drivers crossing tracks when a train is coming, a sliding wall that creates a solid barrier between the track and oncoming traffic is proposed. The wall could be equipped with energy absorbing devices to lessen the impact in case of a head-on collision.
