SAFETY FEATURES AND PRINCIPLES OF THE GOTTHARD BASE TUNNEL
The construction works of the Gotthard Base Tunnel - the core part of the new trans-alpine railway axis through Switzerland - have been started. The works on the access tunnels are very well-developed. The main jobs will be awarded to the contractors in 2001. The commercial operation is scheduled to start in 2012. Operating safety is an immense challenge with regard to the construction method, the technical equipment and to the organisation. This paper highlights key features and principles that will ensure a high standard of safety for the system. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114957.
