OBJECT DETECTION WITH LASER SCANNERS FOR AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATIONS
In this paper, the authors describe how laser scanners can be used in vehicle guidance and collision avoidance applications. They give an overview of the components and describe how the object detection algorithm tracks objects and calculates parameters such as position size, speed and acceleration. The algorithm is configurable for various conditions, including indoor or outdoor tracking with low or high vehicle speeds. The scanners work with an active laser-light source, are able to see through light rain, snow and fog, and have built-in signal processing to free the vehicle guidance system from the time-consuming tasks of obstacle detection and tracking.
