EFFECTS OF INTELLIGENT SPEED ADAPTATION ON DRIVING BEHAVIOUR
For a one year period a practical trial takes place with twenty passenger cars and one passenger bus that have been equipped with an Intelligent Speed Adaptation System (ISA). The Dutch ISA system permanently monitors the speed of the vehicle. If the speed limit is exceeded, the fuel inlet is automatically restricted. One objective of this trial is to examine whether ISA is a realistic option as an instrument for speed control. This paper discusses the effects of ISA on driving behaviour of the 120 test drivers. Additionally, the technical feasibility of ISA is examined. It describes the research methods and preliminary results. Speed data are collected by means of automatic data loggers and through driver logbooks. In this way a thorough insight can be derived on how people adapt their behaviour under the influence of new speed control technology. For the covering abstract see ITRD E114174.
