GPS/GIS TECHNOLOGIES FOR TRAFFIC SURVEILLANCE AND MANAGEMENT : A TESTBED IMPLEMENTATION STUDY
This report describes a flexible Global Positioning System (GPS)-based data collection unit which incorporates GPS, data logging capabilities, two-way wireless communications, and a user interface in an embedded system which eliminates/minimizes driver interaction. The unit is intended for use in both traffic operations and travel behavior. The report presents an overview of the TRACER system, a portable in-vehicle data collection system and associated support software. This is followed by a description[ of some of the initial experience using the extensible data collection unit (EDCU) and a summary of initial tests of system functionality. Technical design parameters for the EDCU are presented, followed by an overview of the TRACERMap GIS developed for analyzing data from the EDCU.
